A few weeks ago I took Nick for lunch in The Walnut Tree near Abergavenny for his 21st birthday. He’d been talking for a while about going to a Michelin star restaurant after watching the Heston Blumenthal series so I thought it would be the perfect birthday present. At £180 per person, I couldn’t quite stretch to The Fat Duck (Heston’s 3 Michelin star restaurant) so decided to look at the 1 star restaurants instead!
The first thing I’m going to say about The Walnut Tree is that the food was incredible; it was easily the best meal we’d both had in our lives! The atmosphere in the restaurant was really relaxed and friendly and the staff were brilliant. They didn’t intrude but always made sure we were well looked after. They even put a candle in Nick’s pudding which was a really nice touch!
The prices are obviously higher than your normal restaurant but the food and service definitely made it worth it. There is also a set menu at lunch time which is £20 for two courses or £26 for three. We went the whole hog and had three courses and although we were full at the end we weren’t uncomfortably stuffed! The menu is quite traditional and changes regularly depending on what ingredients are available. I don’t really like fish very much but took a risk and had mackerel in a sauce (can’t remember what sauce sorry!) and it was absolutely delicious. The biggest surprise for me though was how nice the Bakewell Tart was. I’ve only ever had the ones you get from a packet so didn’t realise how nice an actual Bakewell Tart tastes!
We had a fabulous time at The Walnut Tree and I’d definitely recommend it to everyone!
