Ten Minute Time Out

Baby sitting on a bench in a park

Yesterday, Dylan was having one of those grizzly days. He was just getting over a cold and hadn’t been sleeping well for weeks. I was trying to pursuade him that a nap would be a brilliant idea before his swimming class but he was having none of it.

I decided to leave half an hour early to see if he would drift off in the car. Don’t ask me why I thought this would be a good idea – he absolutely hates going in the car and pretty much always screams blue murder! Not surprisingly, he didn’t fall asleep and was not happy with me one bit.

We gave up on the nap and instead I took him for a ten minute walk through the park. I’d never taking him to this park before and he had the best ten minutes. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. We sat on a bench and his little head was swivelling every which way trying to take everything in. He smiled at every single person who walked past and reached out to try and touch the passing dogs. It made me all emotional thinking that in just a few short months he will be running off to go and play in the playground he was so intently watching.

It was lovely just sitting together on a bench watching the world go by. Who cares if he missed his nap, I’m sure the fresh air was almost as refreshing! He still managed to enjoy his swimming class at least and even did his first underwater swim.

Our ten minute time out has made these few months of sleep deprivation mean nothing and made me realise just how fast the time is passing. Eight months old already! I’m so lucky to be his mum.
