My “Curly Girl” Attempt

Various products suitable for curly girl method

I briefly mentioned here about my attempt at the “curly girl” method. This involves cutting out silicones and only using completely natural products on your hair. I first started trying the curly girl method around Christmas in 2016. We’d recently got engaged and I wanted to try and sort out my dry, frizzy hair before the wedding. After reading lots about how wonderful the method was and looking at tonnes of photos of amazing curls, I was expecting big things. I knew it might take a few weeks for my hair to transition from dry and frizzy to sleek, hydrated and voluminous but the weeks turned into months and I never really felt like my hair looked all that different. However, I kept going as I figured that even if it didn’t look it, my hair must be healthier now that I wasn’t loading it with chemicals every day.

My pregnancy wreaked havoc with my hair, making it even drier and harder to control. I ended up going back to using some products with silicone – not every day but on days when I was just too fed up of having a frizzy halo around my head. Since Dylan was born, I’ve not been as bothered about having perfect, frizz-free hair, I’ve had more important things to worry about (!) , and have been using a mixture of natural products and silicones.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to use up some of the many half finished products in my bathroom which is quite a challenge. I’ve tried so many different brands of natural hair care and spent a small fortune but have yet to find my holy grail. The closest I’ve found has been the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancer Smoothie which I use at least every few days. Many of the products I’ve tried are formulated for afro hair and are just too heavy for me. They can make my hair look weighed down and a little greasy.

I’ve decided to have one last go at getting the curly girl method to work for me and if I’ve not succeeded by the summer I think I will go back to my old chemical laden products. If nothing else it will save me some pennies. Watch this space for updates on new brands I try over the next few months and if you have any suggestions please let me know!
