Here’s a list of some Christmas gifts and some tasty Christmas treats!

Green & Blacks Tasting Collection contains a mixture of 12 different flavours which come with little tasting cards.  The cards have facts and recipe suggests for you to try.  The collection of 395g costs £10.99.

Mrs Crimble’s Large Cranberry Macaroons taste delicious and cost just £1.49.

Fox’s have a few different biscuit selection boxes – The Chocolate Edition, The Brandy Snaps Collection and Fox’s Wonders to name a few.  The selection boxes cost between around £2 and £12.

Nudo have a range of Italian gift sets which are great for foodies.  There are lots of different flavoured olive oils, panettone and you can even adopt an olive tree!

Chambord is a raspberry liqueur in a gorgeous bottle!  You can get recipes for cocktails from the website as well.  My favourite is the Chambord Royale:

Glass: Champagne Flute

Ingredients: 10ml Chambord, Cava or Prosecco, Raspberry for garnish

Method: Pour a splash (10ml) of Chambord into a champagne flute, top with your favourite fizz and add a succulent raspberry for decoration.

Captain Morgan’s Spiced is a rum which works well in a hot spiced Christmas punch!

Cupcakes & Cocktails!

Last weekend, I went to London for the day with my friend Alice to go to a cupcake decorating course.  Alice is getting married next year and is planning on making a cupcake wedding cake so we were hoping to get some ideas!  After lunch and an afternoon of sightseeing, we made our way to The Thistle Hotel Westminster where the course was being held.

The course was run by The Cocoa Box which holds a few different cupcake and chocolate classes.  Our course was called the Cupcake and Cocktails class so we were welcomed with a delicious cocktail!  As we only had two hours, we didn’t actually bake any cupcakes, just decorated some which had been made for us.  We tried various different icings, learnt how to use each type and were given recipes for both the cakes and icing.

What do you think of our cakes?

The course was great fun so if you want to learn how to do cupcakes then I’d definitely recommend it.  I’d love to try the chocolate course too!

A Couple of Valentine’s Day Ideas…..

This Elemis Skin Nourishing Milk Bath Anniversary Edition is expensive but makes your bath that extra bit special. It has an old fashioned glass bottle which you can reuse and it smells gorgeous.

Something a bit cheaper but still just a lovely smelling is a Bodhi gift set. The products don’t contain any harmful parabens, sulphates and petrochemicals and has a high ratio of essential oils. I love this cute I heart…. t shirt from La Redoute and it’s much cheaper than you would think at just £9.

Find-Me-A-Gift have some good ideas including this Rose Compact, the Valentine’s themed snuggie blanket and loads more. Not too sure about this Cupid’s Cushion though!  I mean it’s a fun idea but I personally wouldn’t pay £18 for it (certainly not the £30 when it’s not in the sale).  There are some much nicer gifts on the website which I would choose over this cushion.

For something different, why not try this Black Moth Truffle Vodka? I’ve got to admit that I wasn’t a massive fan when I first tasted it – it tastes quite salty. I’ve never actually had a proper truffle so can’t say whether they taste anything like the vodka but it is made using them so I would assume that it does! The website has lots of ideas for cocktails using the Truffle Vodka, some of them are very odd and not what you would think to put together but they somehow work!If you’re not sure about something quite as exotic as the Truffle Vodka, why not try BLOOM Gin.  It has “delicate floral notes and aromas, enriched by the natural botanicals of chamomile, pomelo and honeysuckle, capture the uplifting sense of spring” according to the website.  I’ve got to be honest, I’ve only tried it with tonic but there are some really nice looking cocktail recipes on their website if you want to jazz it up a little.

I don’t know about you but I can’t tell the difference between sparkling wine and proper Champagne (unless I drink one after the other!) so if, like me, you can’t afford to splash out on the real stuff then Hardys have a great alternative – Hardys Crest Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir. They’ve also got a rose version which tastes delicious as well.

Smirnoff Cocktails

I’ve recently tried the new Smirnoff Cocktails and I think they are brilliant.  Although you miss out on the fun of making the cocktails yourself, you do get lovely tasting cocktails quickly and easily.  All you have to do is make sure you drink them straight from the fridge and maybe have some garnishes (fresh mint or lime) on hand.  They are perfect for those of us who don’t have cocktails often enough to have invested in a proper cocktail shaker!  The two flavours I’ve tried are the Cosmopolitan and Mojito.  I’d never had a Mojito before but it tasted delicious and the Cosmopolitan tasted exactly like the ones I’ve made.  The cocktails cost £13.99 which is definitely worth it – I know I will be buying them again!  They can be found at Morrisons, Tesco, Co-op and ASDA.

Birthday Presents for Boys

It’s time again for me to try and find a birthday present for my boyfriend.  I am always trying to find something a bit different but seeing as I am a student I don’t have a lot of money to spend.  This year I have found some great ideas………

Fun stuff

Wicked Vision is actually a website that sells toys and games.  This might not seem suitable for a 20 year old but the stuff they have – boomerangs, yoyos, Frisbees – can be used by people of all ages.  The prices start from just £3.99 which makes them good stocking fillers (or whatever the birthday equivalent is!).  The light up Duncan Pulse yoyo that I bought for my boyfriend ended up being his favourite present of the day!

Urbanz have lots of high quality headphones in a kaleidoscope of different colours.  They have ‘in ear’ headphones, ‘ear hooks’ and the big ‘DJ’ headphones.  I’ve got my boyfriend some blue, ‘in ear’ ones as they are small enough to fit easily into his bag when he comes on the train to visit me!  Urbanz also sell speaker and gadget bags in exciting, bright designs.

Foodie things

Hawkshead Relish have a lot of interesting items.  They sell all sorts of different flavoured relishes as well as jams, cheese, puddings and handmade chocolate.  The prices aren’t much higher than supermarkets but the products make a change from the normal sorts of things that supermarkets sell and they taste much better as well.  My favourite product from this website has to be the Sticky Toffee Sauce which can be poured hot or cold over sticky toffee pudding, ice cream, bananas or whatever else you fancy.

Toiletries

The old fashioned hair product Brylcreem has launched a new range which a brand new logo.  There are lots of products in the range from gels to wax so there should be something to suit all hair types.  The new packaging looks really smart and the product smell good as well.

Drinks

There are lots of drinks you can buy but if you want something a bit special then why not try Camitz Sparkling Vodka from Sweden.  It is perfect for cocktails but you can also drink it as a shot or with a mixer.  It stays bubbly for up to eight hours once opened and apparently stays a premium vodka once the bubbles have gone (I haven’t actually tried this though).  We used the Sparkling Vodka to make yummy Sparkling Cosmopolitan Cocktails.  Here is the recipe we used:

  • 1 part Cointreau
  • 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 4 parts cranberry juice
  • 4 parts Sparkling Vodka
  • All you have to do is shake up all the ingredients (except the vodka) with lots of crushed ice and pour into a glass.  Then top with the Sparkling Vodka.

Another drink to try is Southern Comfort.  You can drink it in lots of different ways – with ginger beer, lemonade, straight or as a New Orleans inspired cocktail.  Southern Comfort has also just launched a new style bottle so even though it’s not the most original of birthday ideas, it is at least slightly different to normal!
