Graduation

After 4 years at university, yesterday I graduated with a Master of Engineering in Engineering Mathematics with First Class Honours! It was a really nice day and the sun even managed to come out for a while as well. Here are a few photos…..

I’m off to Kos in a few hours so haven’t got much time to write anything else at the moment…. need to start packing!

Swinky’s Sweets

I’ve found the most amazing little cafe in Bristol.  It’s called Swinky’s Sweets and is near the bottom of Park Street.  I went in with a friend last week and we loved it.  It is decorated in pastel colours with jars of sweets lining part of the wall and loads of cupcakes, brownies and other yummy things on the counter.  We both opted for a brownie hot chocolate (can’t remember the exact name but there was definitely brownie in it) which is hot chocolate with white and dark chocolate chips in it.  We also couldn’t resist having a cupcake each as well.  I went for the Rolo cupcake while Laura chose the violet one.

They were both delicious, tasted really fresh and were just so pretty!  We’re already planning our next visit!

The Sound of Music

Last week I sawThe Sound of Music’ at the Bristol Hippodrome.  I’ve seen the show with a different cast in London but I think this one might have been slightly better.  Connie Fisher (winner of ‘How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?’) played Maria and she was brilliant.  She has a lovely voice and is a fantastic singer – I don’t think she hit a wrong note through the whole performance.  I was surprised at how good an actress she was as I didn’t actually watch the TV program so wasn’t sure what to expect.  She didn’t overact at all which is something that gets on my nerves a bit in some musicals.  The rest of the cast were great as well and I’d definitely recommend this version of ‘The Sound of Music’.  The only downside of the whole night was the fact that the seats in the Hippodrome can in no way be described as comfy! But then I suppose that’s what you get for buying the cheapest tickets right at the back of the theatre!

FranklinCovey

FranklinCovey have brought some new pens to the UK.  There are lots of styles and colours so something to suit everyone.  All of the styles look smart and individual and are available at a variety of prices, the most expensive being £10.99.

I’ve tried out a pale pink ball point pen from the Bristol range which is cute and the perfect size to fit in a handbag.  To start with the pen was great and wrote nice and smoothly but after an hour or so of writing I noticed it was becoming scratchy and found that the nib had moved up inside the pen a bit.  I thought that maybe I was writing to hard but I have never had this problem with a pen before and even when I wrote more gently, the nib kept moving further up until eventually I couldn’t write at all.  Seeing as the pens have a lifetime guarantee, I’m guessing I probably just got a faulty one!

The Bristol range cost £6.99 and the whole new FranklinCovey collection is available now in the UK; you can call 01582 422793 to find your nearest FranklinCovey stockist.

Driving in Bristol

Much as I love having the Kia Soul, I hate trying to drive around Bristol especially during rush hour.  If you’re not stuck in a queue you’re ending up going in the wrong way in one of the many one way systems.  There is also nowhere at all to park.

This afternoon I tried to go to the pool to start swimming before the Swimathon.  I drove around for ages but couldn’t find anywhere to park so ended up parking closer to my house than the pool.  Then, when I finally arrived at the swimming pool I was told it was closed for swimming lessons for another hour even though the timetable on the internet said it was open for general swimming.

So I went back home to get directions to another swimming pool, this time making sure there was a car park.  The timetable said it was open for general swimming so I battled my way through the 5 o clock traffic to the pool.  Once again I got to the reception desk only to be sent away again as this pool was also closed for swimming lessons.  It is just so annoying – hopefully the internet timetables will be updated soon!
